Job Summary

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Managing Director is responsible for the financial, operational and administrative management of the organization. The Managing Director supervises the Financial Controller, Grants Administration, Office Manager, Human Resources, Information Technology, Grassroots Organizers and certain Project Managers. In addition, they are the staff support to the Board of Directors.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Manages all organizational operations through the management of the Grassroots Organizers, Office Manager, Human Resources and Corporate Insurance
  • Coordinates monthly Executive Committee of the Board of Directors and all other Board of Directors meetings working with the Executive Director and Board Officers
  • Implements the organization’s strategic plan; works with managers to ensure that goals and objectives are appropriately set to realize strategic objectives; coordinates the strategic planning process
  • Ensures accountability systems for achieving goals and objectives are in place and effective
  • Working with the Executive Director, reviews all major organizational agreements and contracts including grants, vendor contracts, legal agreements and offer letters
  • Responsible for design, and implementation of all company administrative and operational policies seeking approval of the Executive Director and Board when necessary
  • Manages the Development Director and Grassroots Fundraising activities and pipeline to ensure budget achievement
  • Oversee all financial activities and responsibilities of the organization including budgeting and financial reporting through the management of the Financial Controller, Grants Administration and Project Managers
  • Manages the staff to oversee all financial, project/program, and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; oversee preparation of all financial reporting materials for corporate and foundation grants
  • Manages the annual budgeting and planning process; compare to actual results; identify, explain, and correct variances as appropriate
  • Oversees the management organizational cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with members of the management team, including but not limited to the development director and program director
  • Supervises the communications and actions required to manage and report donor contributions
  • Oversees the IT and Communications systems and directs the staff in the management of these systems

Qualifications

Seven to ten years of senior managerial experience in a not for profit organization including management of financial functions; significant experience in fundraising management; a strong background in large member/volunteer driven organizations; strong experience in a complex nonprofit that has multiple programs; Proven track record of superior leadership and communications skills

Other qualifications include:

  • Minimum of a BA; MBA or related degree preferred;
  • Strong and in-depth experience in leadership of managers across several functional areas including operations, finance, and administration
  • Solid experience in staff development and advancement
  • Management of financial reporting and budgeting functions and information to a variety of internal and external stakeholders
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, board, or other outside partners;
  • Ability and desire to translate complex concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers
  • A track record in grants management oversight as it relates to compliance and reporting of corporate, and foundation grants is essential
  • Experience in management of technology and related functions including donor management, accounting and reporting systems
  • Keen analytic, organization, and problem solving skills, which allows for strategic data interpretation vs. simple reporting

Deputy Director — ACTION Secretariat

Together with the ACTION Director, the Deputy Director of the ACTION Secretariat based in Washington DC will form a fast-paced professional management team to achieve our growing portfolio of global health advocacy goals. The Deputy Director will support the Director’s work of driving key influencing and communications strategies, coalition building, policy analysis, and overall partnership and Secretariat management. The Deputy Director will support this work in part by taking the lead on supporting country workplans, policy research, and strengthening ACTION’s capacity for monitoring and evaluation. The Deputy Director will also support day to day operations and work with the director to build our commitment to becoming a learning Secretariat and partnership.

The ability to think and operate strategically and creatively in a fast-changing campaigning environment is critical to performing this role. Our new Deputy Director must be a confident decision maker, with the humility necessary for complex collaboration and a strong commitment to consultation and multi-stakeholder decision-making. The ideal candidate will be an experienced and skilled project and staff manager with an understanding of how planning, research, and multi-stakeholder work influences policy change and impacts resource mobilization. The Deputy Director will embody a strong commitment to transparency and accountability to funders and other stakeholders and will be responsible for managing updates to major donors, operationalizing advocacy campaign ideas, and work as a sounding board to other senior level managers to support sound decision-making.

The Deputy Director will oversee and continue to build a research portfolio that includes policy research, tracking of governments’ spending for global health, supporting partner research and strategic intelligence gathering necessary for designing and executing high-level political advocacy strategies. The Deputy Director will manage ACTION’s research team and supervise the development of research products such as fact sheets, policy briefs, research updates to donors and other research-related materials, including online content and multi-media tools.

The Deputy Director will support the identification of knowledge and skills gaps within the Secretariat and support the ACTION Director’s commitment to and goals for professional development of secretariat team, working continually to develop the expertise of team members. The ideal candidate will have a commitment to creating a culture of learning, will support ACTION’s uptake of new tools, technologies and platforms, and will build a cohesive team committed to learning and executing best practice. The Deputy Director will promote project innovation to improve efficiency of processes, and advocacy impact, and support critical evaluation processes to improve strategic use of resources.

The Deputy Director will also support the management of day-to-day project activities and will be the team leader when the ACTION Director is traveling, off-site or otherwise unavailable. This will require a keen awareness of implementation across all parts of the project. The Deputy Director will serve as one of ACTION’s public faces, representing ACTION with decision-makers, advocacy allies and partners, and with the media. Some international travel will be required. The Deputy Director will also support ACTION’s growth and expansion by working with the director and other staff to investigate new issue areas, contexts, opportunities, and partners to grow the impact and reach of our advocacy.

The candidate should have a degree/s and a depth of experience relevant to the responsibilities of this position. International experience, as well as experience with mass communications, digital activism, or other social marketing tools will make a candidate stand out.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills are a non-negotiable and the ability to work fluently in other languages is a plus.

Senior Associate for Campaigns and Advocacy — ACTION Secretariat

The Senior Associate for Campaigns and Advocacy at the ACTION Secretariat in Washington DC will support the ACTION director to achieve ACTION’s growing international global health advocacy. This person will work with the ACTION director and deputy director to promote an integrated, evidence-based, collaborative approach to our advocacy goals. The ideal candidate will make full use of research, policy analysis, coalition-building, communications, and organizational partner expertise to achieve our strategic policy and resource mobilization goals.

The Senior Associate for Campaigns and Advocacy will have a keen understanding of how to influence political structures and decision makers. We require someone who is an excellent communicator and skilled spokesperson committed to honing negotiation and influencing skills and supporting our Secretariat team and partners to do so as well. As this role will cut across and support the portfolios of several others, it will require an ability to work effectively with other senior managers, and a commitment to building and working collaboratively with the international and Secretariat team to raise the profile and effectiveness of our shared work.

The Senior Associate for Campaigns and Advocacy will connect with key external allies and represent ACTION as needed, including some international travel. This role will strengthen ACTION’s work as a learning partnership and invest in creative tools for research and advocacy that will amplify the engagement of our partners, elevate the level of our campaigning, and achieve our measurable targets.

The ideal candidate will have experience in developing and leading complex multi-country advocacy strategies and will put high value on multi-stakeholder work. The ideal candidate will also have experience with rights-based approaches or an understanding of the human rights and justice elements of effective development, as well as an understanding of international institutions and processes, development issues, and debates.

The candidate should have a relevant degree/s or equivalent experience and several years of demonstrable experience in designing, leading, and winning campaigns. International campaigning experience or an understanding of other advocacy contexts, as well as experience with or openness to mass communications, digital activism or other social marketing tools, will make a candidate stand out.

Operations Intern — Ongoing

RESULTS/RESULTS Educational Fund (REF) is seeking a highly competent, enthusiastic Operations Intern to be hired immediately. This is an unpaid position.

The operations intern will assist the Office Manager with a variety of duties, including planning a major international conference with hundreds of participants in Washington, D.C. This position will have numerous opportunities for initiative and growth.

Responsibilities:

Support planning and coordination of a major International Conference in Washington, D.C:

  • Register participants over the phone and take down information regarding payment method. Review registration forms as they come into the office and follow up as needed.
  • Edit, copy, and prepare conference packets, including background information on poverty issues and logistical information.
  • Serve as lead coordinator on numerous conference logistics.
  • Create and proofread many conference materials, including programs, schedules, speaker biographies, and more.
  • Create display signs for the conference.
  • Assist with the management of conference volunteers.
  • Attend conference-planning meetings, take notes, and coordinate follow up actions.

Other support for Office Manager:

  • Organize monthly mailings to RESULTS/REF volunteers.
  • Assist in planning national conference calls with RESULTS/REF volunteers.
  • Manage ordering and tracking of office supplies.
  • Maintain various logs for internal business use.
  • Assemble materials for staff meetings.
  • Manage large database of volunteers and donors.
  • Prepare materials and packets for staff and guests.

Qualifications

  • Ability to work on a team and willingness to pitch in whenever a job needs to get done.

Domestic (U.S.) Anti-Poverty Legislative Intern —  Spring and Summer 2012

Duties listed are subject to change based on interest and organizational needs. This internship is unpaid and requires at least a 2.5 month commitment. We are still accepting applications for Spring 2012 and have begun reviewing candidates for Summer 2012 -- with preference given to candidates who apply by February 3.

Responsibilies

#1: Collaborate on strategic planning for both legislative strategy and grassroots expansion of RESULTS in the U.S.

  • Participate in weekly Domestic team meetings and help strategize on U.S. Poverty Campaigns. This may include message development, grassroots expansion planning, and legislative/advocacy planning.
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings and other staff gatherings.
  • Attend briefings, conferences, and other meetings on behalf of RESULTS and providing the domestic team with notes and recommended strategies from such meetings.
  • Set up lobby meetings with members of the intern’s congressional delegation to urge action on our campaigns.

#2: Provide support to RESULTS volunteers via existing system of conference calls, weekly action alerts, and e-mail newsletters. Activities may include:

  • Write and edit weekly e-mail updates, action sheets, website backgrounders, action alerts, blog posts, and other written communications.
  • Provide materials requested by RESULTS volunteers to assist them in their campaign work.
  • Assist in planning and producing monthly national conference calls (second Saturday of every month).
  • Participate in occasional evening training calls with our grassroots network.
  • Possible participaton in generating media coverage that is supportive of our campaigns. This may include helping plan and organize issue-specific conference calls for editorial writers and other journalists, writing and editing background materials for media campaigns, contacting media outlets and providing them with necessary information, as well as supporting RESULTS volunteers in their efforts to generate local media.
  • Participate in grassroots support of targeted campaigns. Often RESULTS will construct a focused and intensive campaign to accomplish specific short- and long-term goals. The intern will likely be involved in supporting grassroots on these campaigns.
  • Lay groundwork for starting a RESULTS chapter on campus after the completion of the DC internship.

#3: Administrative work.

  • RESULTS will make every effort to minimize the level of administrative work for the intern. However, some will be required.

Global Legislative Intern — Ongoing

This position could be part-time (15–20 hours a week) or full-time (40 hours a week). Candidates who can work full days (9 am to 6 pm) are greatly preferred. Part-time intern candidates must be available on a Monday-Wednesday-Friday or Tuesday-Thursday schedule for full days. Expected start date within the first week of January, 2012.

Responsibilies

  • Working directly with senior team staff to support overall project needs.
  • Preparing, updating, reviewing, and editing fact sheets, website content, memos, correspondence, policy briefs, reports, press releases, or other written materials related to the project.
  • Assisting research efforts (including literature reviews, data analysis, internet searches, etc.) and supporting the development of briefing materials on U.S. and global policy issues, TB surveillance, vaccines, education for all, microfinance, foreign assistance reform, advocacy opportunities, etc.
  • Assisting with staff travel arrangements and logistics for events, conferences, and meetings.
  • Supporting media efforts, grassroots activities, congressional work, and other activities around advocacy opportunities.
  • Supporting U.S. legislative campaign efforts coordinated by legislative and grassroots staff.
  • Tracking generated media and maintaining media archive of coverage.
  • Providing overall administrative support to staff and overall project needs.

Desired Skills and Qualifications

  • Experience and/or interest in advocacy and/or international development/poverty issues.
  • At a minimum, a second year undergraduate student, preferably in international development/affairs, public health, political science, communications/journalism, or other related fields.

  • Supporting program development and expansion projects.
  • Supporting preparation and providing logistical support leading up to a major International Conference in DC.
  • Assistingwith staff travel arrangements and logistics for events, conferences, and meetings.
  • Providing logistical support for fundraising and grassroots events.
  • Providing overall administrative support such as: phone coverage, photocopies and faxes, preparing envelopes for bulk and mass mailings, and setting up conference calls.
  • Support office manager in managing database of volunteers and donors, along with learning the donor database and mail-merge systems to produce donor acknowledgments.

Desired Skills and Qualifications
